Journaling is like brushing your teeth for your mind. But we often overcomplicate it. People think they have to write pages and pages every night before they go to sleep. That is not the case! Here's how to build a journaling habit that sticks:
Forget filling pages. Start with one sentence a day. Or answer one prompt. You’re building trust with yourself, not writing a novel.
Pair it with your morning coffee, evening skincare routine, or after your daily walk. Habit-stacking makes new routines easier to adopt.
Leave your journal out where you can see it - on your pillow, desk, or bathroom shelf. Out of sight usually means out of mind.
Light a candle. Play some instrumental music. Or simply sip tea while you write. Rituals signal your brain that 'it’s time to drop in' for a quick journal...
There’s no right way to journal. Swear, scribble, doodle, cry, contradict yourself. This is your space to be radically real.
Blank page anxiety is real. That’s where prompts come in handy (don’t worry, I've written some below for you).
These prompts aren’t about surface-level answers. They’re designed to reveal, realign, and rewire.
Use one per day or choose intuitively based on what you need.
What thoughts or beliefs keep looping in my mind lately?
What am I pretending not to know?
If my overwhelm could speak, what would it say?
What version of me do I need to forgive or understand more deeply?
What childhood belief might still be unconsciously running the show?
What have I outgrown but am still holding onto?
What feels heavy right now - and what feels light?
Where am I betraying myself to keep the peace?
What does my truth actually sound like?
Who do I believe I am when no one’s watching?
What identity am I ready to shed?
What is my future self whispering to me today?
What’s one thing I can do today to move 1% closer to the life I want?
What am I scared to start - and why?
What would I do if I trusted myself more?
How does my future self think, act, and speak?
What boundaries does she hold without guilt?
What am I calling in - and what must I release to receive it?
Use voice notes first if writing feels hard - then transcribe.
Try morning pages: 1 paragraph of stream-of-consciousness to clear the clutter. You can increase this as you go - and when you get used to putting pen to paper - you probably will!
Keep a ‘sacred notes’ journal on your phone for on-the-go reflections.
Date every entry - you’ll love seeing your growth over time. Seeing your growth inspires you to carry on with it and recognise changes that you may wish to make.
Celebrate the resistance - it means something important is about to come through.
Journaling won’t magically solve every problem. But it will help you understand yourself. And from that understanding, you’ll move differently. You’ll choose differently. You’ll become someone different.
You’ll stop spinning in circles and start stepping forward - one raw, real, honest page at a time.
