Ah, good old time management. That elusive skill we’re all convinced we’ll master someday - right after finishing that next episode, answering one more email, or scrolling through just one more smiling cat video. Spoiler alert: the smiling cat videos will still be there when you're done.
So, let’s stop the scrolling, binge watching, and over exerting at work, and let's dive into some actionable hacks that can help you reclaim your time, boost productivity, and finally get the break you deserve.
According to research, effective time management can boost productivity by as much as 30%. That’s over a whole quarter of your day you could regain to do the things you love (or, let’s be honest, take a nap). But it’s not just about getting more done; it’s about doing the right things at the right time and giving yourself permission to pause when needed. It is about not overloading your brain, it is about reducing stress and anxiety.
The Pomodoro Technique is a game-changer for anyone prone to procrastination or overwhelmed by a mile-long to-do list. Here’s how it works:
Pick a task.
Set a timer for 25 minutes.
Work on the task until the timer rings.
Take a 5-minute break. (Yes, this is your sanctioned cat video time!)
Repeat four times, then take a longer 15-30 minute break.
The beauty of this method lies in its simplicity. Knowing that a break is just around the corner makes daunting tasks feel manageable. Plus, those short intervals of focused work can dramatically improve your concentration and efficiency.

By minimizing context-switching, you’ll save time and mental energy, making it easier to focus on your work and enjoy your well-earned breaks.
Let’s be honest: overcommitting is a major reason why so many of us feel overwhelmed. Learning to say no is a superpower. Remember, every time you say yes to something, you’re saying no to something else—often your own rest and well-being.
Not sure how to say no politely? Try phrases like:
“I’d love to help, but I’m currently at capacity.”
“Thanks for thinking of me, but I’ll have to pass this time.”
“That sounds great, but I need to prioritise other commitments right now.”
Ironically, the same devices that distract us can also help us stay on track. Here are some tools worth exploring:
Todoist or Asana: For organising and prioritising tasks.
Focus@Will: For background music scientifically designed to enhance focus.
RescueTime: For tracking how you spend your time online (brace yourself for some eye-opening stats).
Forest: A fun app that lets you grow virtual trees by staying off your phone.
These tools can help you create boundaries and structure, ensuring you spend your time intentionally rather than reactively.
When’s the last time you blocked off time on your calendar for yourself? Downtime isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity.
Schedule it like you would any other important meeting, and don’t cancel on yourself. Use this time to:
Take a walk.
Meditate or practice mindfulness.
Read a book.
Indulge in your favourite hobby.
Giving yourself permission to rest can actually make you more productive when it’s time to get back to work.
Ever feel paralysed by the sheer size of a project? Breaking it into smaller, actionable steps can make it feel less overwhelming. Instead of writing “Finish presentation” on your to-do list, try:
Outline key points.
Create slides for the introduction.
Add visuals and charts.
Practice the presentation.
Each small win will motivate you to keep going, and before you know it, the project will be complete.
What really motivates you? Use that as leverage. Promise yourself a small reward for completing tasks. For example:
